This isn’t my story, but rather my mom’s. She used to work as a cafeteria worker for Katy ISD a couple of years ago, and during her first year was put on rotation between different schools as a sub. Each school had its own small system of how things were run, but overall, the cafeterias had basically the same rules. However, at one of the schools she worked at, she wanted to talk to her coworker, who was also a Hispanic woman like her. But when she tried to speak to her in Spanish, her coworker told her to keep her voice down and only use English. Later, during their break, she told my mom that the head of the cafeteria (I don’t remember the title but basically the cafeteria manager) would get really angry if anyone was speaking in any other language than English during the school day. Of course, my mom was furious, and we looked at the rules for the district, and there was nothing that prohibited employees from speaking in a different language. She sent in a complaint to the district but was never followed up on it. The cafeteria manager/head was clearly abusing her authority over her staff, and I just find it horrible that the staff was restricted on how they could communicate between themselves, just because she preferred them not to.
Esta no es mi historia, sino la de mi mamá. Hace un par de años, ella solía ser una trabajadora de cafetería para Katy ISD, y durante su primer año fue asignada en rotación entre diferentes escuelas como suplente. Cada escuela tenía su propio sistema pequeño de cómo se manejaban las cosas, pero en general, las cafeterías tenían básicamente las mismas reglas. Sin embargo, en una de las escuelas en las que trabajaba, quería hablar con su compañera de trabajo, que también era una mujer hispana como ella. Pero cuando trató de hablar con ella en español, su compañera de trabajo le dijo que mantuviera la voz baja y solo usara el inglés. Más tarde, durante su descanso, le dijo a mi mamá que la directora de la cafetería (no recuerdo el título, pero básicamente la gerente de la cafetería) se enojaba mucho si alguien hablaba en cualquier otro idioma que no fuera el inglés durante el día escolar. Por supuesto, mi mamá estaba furiosa, miramos las reglas del distrito y no había nada que prohibiera a los empleados hablar en un idioma diferente. Ella envió una queja al distrito, pero nunca se le dio seguimiento. La directora / gerente de la cafetería claramente estaba abusando de su autoridad sobre su personal, y me parece horrible que el personal estuviera restringido en la forma de comunicarse entre ellos, solo porque ella prefería que no lo hicieran.
