Topic: Antisemitism, Antisemitismo

Submission:

My 9th grade World Geo class was FULL of antisemitic experiences. Our teacher used reusable scantrons--laminated scantrons that we filled in with expo markers. Before laminating them, we were allowed to decorate them. One kid basically made his entire scantron an “I Spy” for swastikas. There were a lot. The teacher saw it and it still got laminated and used the whole year.

On top of that, another kid was vehemently pro Nazi Germany. SPECIFICALLY Nazi Germany. He was constantly talking about how proud he was to be descended from a country who did that. I was the only one in the class who called him out on it, and when I told him I included the fact that I was ethnically Jewish and that my dad was a practicing Jewish man. He basically ramped up his pride from then on, on top of making blatantly antisemitic remarks. The more I called him out on it, the more he escalated. Eventually he started saying what he claimed were versions of the word "bitch" in other languages very loudly every time I tried to speak when we had free time in class. Not a single person stood up for me - instead, multiple basically joined him. When I called his remarks antisemitic, people would be like, "well he's right" and "Hitler's Germany before the war WAS prosperous so.” It was exhausting to be in that class. I'm 90% sure the teacher heard him, both his antisemitic remarks and his name-calling, since she would often be watching our side of the room and telling us to be quiet. No disciplinary action was taken against him for what he did in that class.

Additional info:

I've also heard plenty of antisemitic jokes in other classes + in the halls, but I kinda view them as "normal" unfortunately because they're so common. This, on the other hand, took the cake as one of the most exhausting environments to be in as someone who is connected to Judaism.
